Success Stories

Success Is A Journey - Scott's Story

Scott selected Technology & Employment Connections to help him find a new job. He had been previously employed but was let go due to over-staffing. His mother had passed away and Scott often spoke of her and the things they used to do together as a family.

As an avid bus rider, Scott has an impressive knowledge about the age, types and condition public buses. Unfortunately, there were no jobs that matched Scott’s skill set in this field..As a job seeker, Scott faithfully attended meetings and interviews. As businesses selected other job candidates, Scott began to doubt himself. This led to missed appointments and hesitation to seek out employment.

With the support of his sister, Scott took some time to return to wellness and then he turned to TEC once again for help finding a job. Scott was devastated when his father passed away. His sister Paige, who had always been supportive of Scott, moved back into the family home. Together, and with Paige’s help, Scott had the security of home and family once again.

Scott initially said that he preferred to work in the stockroom away from people, General Manager, Kevin, from the Smokey Point Lowe’s saw his Scott’s potential and spoke candidly to Scott about his skill level and how his personality was an asset to customer interactions. Scott was offered a position in the Lowe’s Home and Garden department, and he accepted the job.

Scott was given a variety of tasks and he learned some key strategies when working directly with customers. Scott’s confidence grew and his supervisor, Kim, noted that although a bit shy, he was getting more comfortable speaking and helping customers. She especially appreciated his attendance and willingness to complete a variety of jobs, even when they were outside his department.

At the end of his third month at the store, before he completed his new employee probation period, Scott was awarded his first Lowe’s badge for having the third best Home and Garden department in the region. Scott proudly showed his badge to TEC staff at their final meeting.

Today Scott is a more confident person who willingly helps customers and has found a new sense of pride as a valued employee.
